Our Dentist Recycling Practices in Cairns

Sustainability in Dentistry

Cairns Precision Dental Group has recently registered with Terracycle Australia as a drop-off point for certain recyclable items. Last year alone, 30 million toothbrushes were disposed of contributing to 1000 tonnes to landfill.

Instead of being part of the problem, we want to be part of the solution and encourage you all to do your bit as well. Together with Terracycle, we can recycle or upcycle plastic waste instead of incinerating or landfilling it.

Recycling is a core part of our practice ethos of creating a positive impact in Cairns and the surrounding tablelands area and caring for our earth and environment by recycling and striving towards a zero-waste future.

If you'd like to find out more about our sustainable recycling practices or book an appointment for a dental check-up, call Cairns Precision Dental Group today at (07) 4054 2203 or complete our online form.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is dental recycling?

Dental recycling refers to the process of repurposing or properly disposing of dental materials to reduce waste and minimise environmental impact. Items such as metal fillings, dentures, crowns, toothbrushes, and toothpaste tubes can often be recycled through specialised programs. Some materials, like precious metals from crowns or titanium from implants, can be reclaimed for reuse. Recycling dental products helps reduce landfill waste and supports sustainable practices in dental care.

  • Can metal from dental implants be recycled?

Yes, metal from dental implants, such as titanium and other alloys, can be recycled. These metals are highly durable and can be repurposed for industrial uses or medical applications. Some dental recycling programs accept old implants for processing, ensuring valuable materials do not go to waste. While implants are typically not reused in new procedures, recycling helps conserve resources and reduces environmental impact. Always check with a specialist recycling service for proper disposal.

  • Can old gold crowns or bridges be reused?

Yes, old gold crowns and bridges can be melted down and repurposed. The gold used in dental restorations is often mixed with other metals, but it retains value and can be refined for various applications, including jewellery or new dental work. Many recycling programs and dental practices accept gold crowns for processing. Selling or donating them to a dental recycling program ensures they are put to good use rather than discarded.
